A spikey, speedy little reminder
My children are terrified of bugs. It probably doesn’t help that our home has been continually infested with ants for the last 2 years. They shriek at the sight of a fly. A beetle rumor can keep them out of a room for hours. And a bee? The kids flee in the other direction when a stinger gets within a 2 mile radius.
So we were shocked that the kids were fascinated by this caterpillar during our recent camping trip (and Marvel Girl’s first hike ever). They watched it for more than five minutes as it quickly ( it’s all relative here since it moved faster than Marvel Girl ) inched across the path and up a tree.
Our second camping trip ever. Her first hike. And a spikey, speedy little caterpillar. The end of a glorious “summer”.
Alas, now the winter rains have started…
I just wanted to tell you that I just found your blog today and I love it! I love your sense of humor you really had me going. My 4 year old was diagnosed educational diagnosis) with ASD a few months ago and I have already seen so many things you have posted that will help us at home. Thank you! I’m looking forward to reading and learning more…so nice to ‘meet’ you…
That’s great that the like the spiky caterpillar. Maybe things are changing?
When my girls were little, they were frightened of so many things. I once took them to the feed store to see the cute chickies and bunnies, and they were terrified. Kittens were scary, too. But they outgrew those fears, of course, and are animal-loving young ladies now. 🙂
Oops . . . I meant That’s great that the children like the caterpillar.
Some bugs just amaze kids 🙂 I hope they didn’t touch the caterpillar or touched any part of their skin because they can be very itchy! Nice photostory!
I have one child that loves bugs and all animals…my 11 year old, Nick…..
Sarah on the other hand, screams “BUG” and points her finger then starts freaking out saying, EWW, EWW, YUCKY!! We think it is hilarious…..she has’nt encountered a caterpillar yet….we’ll see what happens when one finally appears!
Have a great weekend.
Love the picture…you have caught the fever!
I love those caterpillars! We’ve got them up here, too. My girls love playing with them.
That is surprising that they would like that spikey little fella. Course it is moving pretty slowly and maybe that helped eliminate their fear a bit.
Plus, he is just so fuzzy! 😉
oh you are lucky – my kids drag every bug their little eyes can spot into my house to “show” me!!
What a neat picture!!
I am almost as bad as your children. I hate bugs. Eww.
Awesome capture! That little guy is so cool looking! I’ve never seen one with a little color. Mine are always white.
What is it about caterpillars? They’re fascinating.
Loved this photostory!!! What a cute glimpse into their lives. And I’m of the “hate them, but try to hide that fact from the Tongginator so that I don’t pass on my phobias” camp. Yeah. It’s not really working.
How cute! My kids aren’t scared of most bugs….just bees and strangely moths.
That was a beautiful caterpillar…
I hope their bugphobia eases now that they see how cute caterpillars are!
See, but he looks fuzzy and soft…one that my daughter would call a “nice bug”. She can handle nice bugs. The others? Those, no matter how harmless, make her shriek and stand on the table like women in old cartoons.
What a great shot!!!
Great picture, cute story. Maybe bugs are better when the live in the woods – far away from ones house! And there is the fuzzy factor – very webkinsish :0)
Frog is partial to the praying mantis. Diva runs from almost all bugs.
He looks quite pretty when you get used to him! Like the colours.
Things are a ch-ch-changing alright! Very neat photo of that caterpillar! We have those here too EVERYWHERE!
Your humor is just plain ol’ fabulous. I adore you, your superhero offspring, and your fabuloso blog.
BTW, I posted another installment of that there untitled story.
WOW – that’s a great pic.
PSF – Dueling Parents
That’s a neat caterpillar–my kids love those things. I think it’s thanks to the Very Hungry Caterpillar book 🙂
What a great pic. The colors pop off the page..
Aurora and Aidan both hates bugs, but give them a worm and they’re happy as a clam.
What is that caterpillar? I saw the exact same bug last sunday. Ok, not the EXACT same bug. I had never seen it before, now I’ve seen it twice in a week. Weird, I tell you.
I’m just like your kids, but I’m fascinated with caterpillars (and other things that won’t hurt you). Glad you had a nice time.
