Comparison of Social Language Disorders- Autism

This information was obtained through the LinguiSystems catalog. It was adapted from “The Source for Asperger’s Syndrome” by Timothy Kowalski. I cannot verify accuracy as there is a range, but it does make for some good comparing and contrasting of diagnoses.

A child with Autism may have a very wide range of IQ scores, but the performance is almost always higher than the verbal scores. However, the IQ scores are questionable based on tests being highly reliant on language skills. Because of delayed language onset and social interactions, children often get this diagnosis before the age of 3. Very delayed language is usually the first red flag that parents notice. According to Mr. Kowalski’s sources, about 50% of children with “classic” Autism acquire language skills. Children with Autism appear to have poor interest in social interactions.
