Words of the Week

Words of the Week was developed to help educators and therapists explicitly teach vocabulary (literal and nonliteral) and provide practice for conversational skills. The skills targeted within this product are based on research (included in product) and CCSS standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.1 – Participate in conversations
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.4 – Multiple meaning and vocabulary
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.5 – Nonliteral language
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.6 – Vocabulary and comprehension
Included in this product:
★ 5 sets – conversational topics, expressions, jokes, higher level verbs, quotes
★ 40 weeks of words for each set
★ Activity ideas
Suggested uses:
★ Post the words of the week on the wall in the classroom. Have students discuss the words and explain them.
★ Use a tablet to reveal only the words and not the definitions. Take turns guessing the definition (for those that include a definition) before swiping the screen to reveal the answer.
★ Use during centers (one packet per group) for conversation and vocabulary practice. Rotate each day.
★ Begin speech therapy for ELD instruction with a routine of learning new vocabulary or new conversational topic each session.

Hi! I’m Dr. Cheri Dodge Chin. I am a published researcher, adjunct professor, and national presenter with a clinical doctorate in speech-language pathology. I have over 20 years of experience in empowering children, educators, and families. I began my blog, Super Power Speech, in 2008 with the hope of engaging other speech pathologists and passing on ideas and resources. The blog is now recognized as one of the first SLP blogs in the world and has been nominated for multiple awards. While browsing, make sure to check out my courses and resource library with over 50 FREE downloads! Aside from flying around and trying to save the world, you can find me studying for my second doctorate degree (this time in education).
