The Voyage of the Mayflower

I was hoping to share with you the amazing selection of activities, readers, and crafts about Thanksgiving on Enchanted Learning. But I eventually realized that only “registered users” could print out many of these resources. I am a registered user at work, and so I often reap the benefits. (I would encourage anyone who homeschools to consider registering as well. It is well worth the $20/year.)

One free activity offered on this site is the Pilgrim’s Voyage. Up until today, The Flash claims he has never heard of the Mayflower or Pilgrims. So we set about on a boat replication.

Identical to the picture book images of the Mayflower, eh?

The kids then “sailed” their vessels across the great Atlantic Ocean. The Flash’s Mayflower even encountered storms and major setbacks forcing it to return to England.

Oh well, no history lesson can be perfect.

The Flash was so enamored with photo manipulation, that he wanted to show off his skills. He started with an entirely black & white photo and “painted” the color back on. He chose the frame and insisted that the “Super Powers signature” was put on as well. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I failed to photograph the Mayflower fleet that was eventually created. But you can use your imagination as to how they took over the 7 seas….

  1. Have you read Barbara Rainey’s book: Thanksgiving: a Time to Remember? It’s beautiful and tells the story well.

  2. What a fantastic way to learn!
When we lived in France, I went in to my son’s class and taught about Thanksgiving. I took a Fischer Price pirate ship with me–the only boat we had at home–and kind of did the same thing. Kids do love visuals and things they can manipulate. But let me tell you, French children in general do not care for pumpkin pie. I learned from experience.

  5. The Flash is so computer saavy, and props for insisting on the registered trademark. Uhm I’m embarrassed to admit my 4 and 5 yr. old just touched Play-doh for the first time last night… any suggestions on what to do with it… you know other than tasting it.

  10. My children love learning from the world map and Australian map on our wall. They’ll stand for ages and ask about the different countries, oceans etc…

I’ll have to use this idea to teach them about Captain Cook and the Endeavour, and their amazing voyage of discovery.

  11. Cute stuff! We may have to develop a Mayflower of our own!

    Blessings!

  12. What a great activity! I love his taste in photo editing – who wouldn’t want “super powers” on their pictures? ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Very cool. I’m getting all these great ideas to try with Daniel next year. I think he’s not quite ready for some of the stories I had planned. We’ll do some fun crafts instead. ๐Ÿ™‚
