In a People House

It’s an oldie but goodie book today! I remember this book from my childhood and was thrilled to re-find it in my home a year ago. I can’t remember if I “borrowed” it from my parents or if I found it at a yard sale. Regardless, I’ve had fun reading it to my kids as it brings back memories. And it is a hoot to see old school telephones, roller skates, and tvs.

Besides introducing a plethora of great vocabulary to young children, this book has fabulous rhythm and rhyme. You can almost sing the book it flows so well.

Speech Therapy ideas:
1. Work on common vocabulary. Ask you child to “find the….” Or label vocabulary by saying “What is this?”

2. Work on more advanced language skills by asking functions of household items. “What do you use this for?”

3. Category skills can be incorporated into this book. “What room does this belong in?”

4. Because most of the vocabulary is so common, this book is a great way to teach rhyme to young kids. Start the rhyme and leave off the last word. Unlike many other rhyming books, where obscure rhyming words are included, these rhymes are very transparent and can be pointed to if needed.

5. Teach children about what things in homes used to look like. They’ll need to know this eventually for reading books. Rotary phone? Record player? Huh? Compare and contrast to what these items look like today.

  1. I LOVE this book as well and have read it a zillion times to my kids through the years. I also like to point out that there can be multiple words for the same object so the kids don’t get frustrated when they pick an adequate word that isn’t right.

  7. I think I saw this book at the Goodwill this afternoon! I should go back and get it, if thats the one I’m thinking I saw. Books are only 39 cents and I bought her like 10 new ones.

Still trying to find Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and The Little Engine That Could (that’s the story I tell her to encourage her when she struggles at school) since I can’t afford to go out and buy them all brand new. No luck yet though.

  9. This is a favourite at our house – one of those books I occasionally hide because I get so sick of it. I’m glad for the tips you gave – will help make reading it a bit more bearable.
