Weeding by hand

This post is a reminisce of our gorgeous weather 2 weekends ago .

Okay, I’m not saying I like it. But weeding exclusively by “sweat of one’s brow” is possible. I avoid chemicals in the yard.

Tools needed: gardening gloves, weeding fork-like thing, weeding rake-like thing, lots of iced tea, and a good book on tape.

3 painful hours later:
Phew! 1/100th of my yard is now weeded. So it’ll be all ready for more weeding by the time we have our next sunny weekend!

Totally unrelated, here are some pictures of tulips in our neighbor’s yard from that same day:

But the earth and your diet will love me if you follow my lead!

  1. You might want to try a loop or double action hoe next time, that way you can stand up to weed. If you catch them before they go to seed, you can just work them back into the soil. It saved me lots of time.

  2. I hope it was sweet tea!

I love your flowers. They’re so pretty.

Come by and check out my blog giveaway!

  3. We’ve been doing the pesticide free thing for a while now, and it is hard work, but I feel good about it.

    Your flowers look gorgeous.

  4. So pretty! I am a tulip junkie. I have a hoe that helps me weed, it’s like a strange triangle with 2 triangles on top–I still have to bend over to pull out the weeds, but they’re loosened up for me.

  5. I refuse to use chemicals too. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a weeded yard. I just wish it wasn’t such hard work. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Ugh. I have to weed. I really don’t want to, but I need to. And, I do it by hand . . . if I had superpowers I would banish those darned things ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. what gorgeous flowers… weeding is rewarding, but not fun!

  8. The flowers are lovely, I couldn’t grow them if you paid me!

  9. Earth friendly is the only way to go, and earth friendly = heart (and body) friendly, so it’s a double deal! Go you! Your garden is beautiful. Look at those colors!!

  10. Your work paid off – the garden looks great. I can’t wait for warmer weather here so we can have some blooms.

  11. What a hard worker…But it looks great! I love tulips!

  12. BEAUTIFUL!! Super B & I have spent that last two evenings working in the yard until dark. That’s my kind of therapy. I love it.

I also avoid chemicals whenever possible and would actually prefer to pull weeds by hand. I like working up close and personal with my flowers.

I don’t know if anyone else is like this, but I hate wearing gardening gloves. I prefer the dexterity of bare hands, especially around my delicate flowers. Our Alabama bermuda grass does rip my hands up pretty bad. In fact, as I sit here in my nice little office typing..my fingers look filthy. But it’s just dirt stains that have to wear off..haha I swear I take a bath.

Would love to see more pics of your garden! Bravo!

  13. Super B’s mom, actually I’m just the opposite. I’m totally sensory oppposed to the feel of dirt on my bare skin. I used to think I hated gardening, until I discovered gardening gloves. Now I love it. And I don’t even mind touching the worms and bugs that get in my path (as long as my gloves are on!)

  14. Gorgeous tulips! It’s till a little early for tulips here. :o(

  15. These photos are inspirational! I’m inspired to rush right over to the local nursery, pick out flowers, have them delivered, and pay my gardener to plant them.

    Hee hee.

Seriously, what a lovely look into spring.

  16. Ugh!

My poor dad went and weeded last weekend and ended up with poison ivy all the way up to his elbows after never having an allergy to the stuff before. I didn’t even know that was possible.

  17. I’m also a do it the hard way weeder. There is something about the painfully calloused hands that makes me feel powerful. But by the time I get the whol yard weeded the place where I started is covered in weeds again. *sigh*

  18. That is extremely impressive. I wasn’t even sure to what weeds the arrows were pointing?! The first time I planted bulbs, I planted them up-side down. I’m not much better today.

  19. The flowers look wonderful; I would be way too embarrassed to show you pictures of our yard.

    BTW, you’ve been tagged!
But only if you want to be ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Love the flowers!!! Weeding is therapeutic for me – I love to weed!

  21. 1/100th?

Yikes! But your work looks beautiful!!! I need some of your motivation!

  22. Those flowers are just beautiful ~ yours and the neighbour’s!! I LOVE flowers, but I totally suck with plants. I never thought about using a book on tape for weeding though. Might have to give that a try this year. That season is rapidly approaching.

  23. Holy cannolies that was a a lot of weeding!
