How to keep floors from getting scratched up

We brainstormed when my son started using chairs as make-shift walkers, all over our newly refinished floors. The little felt pads that most stores sell did NOT do the trick. Suddenly it dawned on us. My fellow teachers do this in their classrooms. Why not at home?

We bought some cheapo tennis balls on-sale at Target, used a box cutter to cut slits (the cheapo balls were hollow), and put on our chair legs. Presto!

Added note: this is a beautiful trick to help children that are sensitive to the noises within the classroom and home.

  1. too funny! Blake did the same time for a long time and still does push them around from time to time, but we have tile in our kitchen so there is less worry there!

  2. Nice! I’ve also found that old baby socks do the trick, too:)

  3. That’s so funny! My poor hardwood are really getting scratched up because those pads just don’t stay on. But I don’t know if I’m ready for the tennis balls quite yet.

  4. Thanks for the comment on my blog! My hubby is very hands on and not much for paperwork(or computer work).

  7. That’s a great idea. I think I may have to wait until my 3 year old gets a little older though, he would want to take the tennis balls off and play with them. LOL

  8. hahahha That is a GREAT idea!!! A lot of teachers do it at my school also.

  9. The “late and unprepared” six words, or the “no palm pilot = death” six words?

I like the tennis ball idea, too. Even though I’m pretty sure my kids would just tip the chairs upside down in order to take them off the legs and throw them at the windows.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
