Best way to learn sign language with your child!

I have been learning American Sign Language (ASL) since I was 7 years old. For a long period of my life, I thought I was destined to be an educator of deaf children. Although several of my students are hard of hearing, I did not follow that early career dream. I did, however, continue to learn ASL through self-teaching and formal classes.

Another teacher at my school told me about Signing Times. The woman who co-created the show (Rachel de Azevedo) is a professional singer and mother of 2 children: one has a profound hearing loss and the other was born with Spina Bifida. My co-worker and this woman are long distance friends because they both have children with Spina Bifida. After her oldest daughter was diagnosed with hearing loss, Rachel despaired about how she could ever sing again knowing that her daughter wouldn’t hear her. Eventually, she discovered that she could use her talents as a singer and advocate to help teach other children to communicate with her daughter. Thus Signing Times was born!

After becoming a mother I bought several Signing Times videos for my kids. I was absolutely amazed not only at how well these videos were made, but also how quickly my kids and I learned the signs! I now own 16 (yes, I did type that correctly) volumes of Signing Times videos.

Awesome! I have been looking for a deal like this one. I can always count on your for great tips. These videos are great. I even catch myself singing their songs. (Believe me, it is WAY better than having Barney stuck in your head!)

  3. We’ve used Signing Time for years – LOVE them! ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree with Anon #1, I get the songs stuck in my head too and LOVE it.

  4. We are HUGE Signing Time fans. Not only has it helped my special needs daughter learn her colors and more, my son will sing their songs incessantly! I often write Rachel letters in my head telling her thank you.
